ISO 14001:2026 Published – What This Means for Certified Organisations

The revised ISO 14001:2026 standard was officially published in April 2026.

The update introduces several changes designed to strengthen environmental management systems and help organisations respond to evolving sustainability expectations. In addition, the revision supports greater alignment with other management system standards.

ISO 14001 is being updated alongside ISO 9001 and ISO 45001, with both standards expected to be published in 2027. As a result, organisations can expect a more consistent approach across quality, environmental, and occupational health and safety management systems.

The good news for certified organisations is that existing ISO 14001 certificates remain valid throughout the transition period. Furthermore, organisations have a three-year migration window from the publication date to adopt the revised standard.

This transition period gives businesses time to:

  • Review the updated requirements
  • Identify any necessary changes
  • Update documentation and processes where required
  • Transition during routine surveillance or recertification audits

For organisations with an established and effective environmental management system, significant disruption is not expected. However, early preparation will help ensure a smooth and efficient transition.

At CDL Group, we will continue to support our clients throughout the migration process. We can provide guidance on understanding the revised requirements, identifying any gaps, and implementing the necessary changes.

As further guidance becomes available, we will continue to share updates and practical advice to help organisations prepare for the transition with confidence.
